Course Review: Chelsfield Lakes Golf Centre

10 Aug

On a lovely summer day, I tee’d it up at the Chelsfield Lakes Golf Centre. My golf group and I felt we needed a change of scenery so we skipped playing our home course – Birchwood – and booked a round at Chelsfield Lakes, located about 3 miles away.

We were pleasantly surprised and thoroughly enjoyed playing the course. It is a very short course, so much so, that you can easily play the back 9 without a driver in your bag. Long hitters will have quite a few chances at Eagle as there are several Par 4s on both, the front and back 9, that are in driving range.

The course measures 6,112 yards/5,588 meters from the back white tee box and no more than 5,787 yards/5,291 meters from the yellow club tee boxes. There are also blue tees allowing the course to play at 4,980 yards/4,553 meters and red tees which play at 4,020 yards/3,675 meters. Par for the course is 71 with back to back par 5s on the front 9 and a solitary par 5 on the back 9. Two par 3s on each 9 and an abundance of short par 4s make this an easy course to attack and score on, providing you are accurate as the course is quite compact.

The back 9 is the easier of the two 9s but I preferred the front 9 for the stunning views, especially from the 3rd and 4th holes.

Despite the name, there aren’t many water hazards on the course and while the fairways are pretty tight and the rough…well, pretty rough, the course is not too punishing. The 28 handicapper in our group even managed to bag 31 points!

The fairways were in very good condition as were the greens, although some of the greens didn’t hold the ball too well. Putting wasn’t too testing as the greens were quite slow and the pin positions on the day we played were very generous…there were very few quick swinging putts. It’s quite clear that the groundsman and his team put a lot of effort into maintaining the course.

A weekend round will run you £32.00 and a midweek round £25. However, the “Super Twilight” round (tee off after 4pm) costs just £15 which is excellent value for money. Bookings can be made by phone on +44 1689 896266 or online at
